Germany's largest cable operator Kabel Deutschland has added catch-up TV services RTL Now and VOX Now to its video-on-demand (VOD) portal Select Video.
The services enable cable customers to watch full-length TV programmes up to seven days after their broadcast in TV quality on their TV set. Some shows are available ahead of their TV broadcast or for longer than seven days in the archive. Next year, the catch-up services of other RTL channels will be added to Select Video.
In total, Select Video now contains content from 47 free-to-air and pay-TV channels. The VOD portal which also features an online video store with blockbuster movies is available to 2.75 million households.
With the distribution of RTL Now and VOX Now by Kabel Deutschland, RTL's catch-up portals become directly available on a cable network for the first time. The offering is – like on the Internet –financed by advertising and free of charge for viewers. Via satellite, RTL's catch-up services are offered by Astra platform HD+ in TV quality, but cost an additional fee.
Cable distribution of RTL Now and VOX Now is part of an extensive carriage deal signed by commercial broadcast group Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland and Kabel Deutschland in June 2012.
