Sky plans German Netflix

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland is working on a new video-on-demand (VOD) service comparable with maxdome, LOVEFiLM, Watchever and Netflix.
For a flat monthly subscription fee of €8-10 customers will be able to access a whole movie library.
The working title of the new offering is Skyflix, probably referring to market leader Netflix, reports German industry magazine Kontakter. There have been rumours in the industry that the US player might come to Germany next year. With the new service, which is to launch in 2014, Sky seems to want to get ahead of Netflix.
In rights acquisition, Sky is probably far ahead of its competitors. The pay-TV broadcaster has been buying the broadcast rights for movies and series from major studios as a combination package for years, both pay-TV and online rights. Sky declined to comment on the move.
