| Sky Sports, L'Équipe 21, Eurosport battle for sports category at Eutelsat TV Awards Editor | 14-10-2013 As its TV Awards ceremony draws nearer, Eutelsat has revealed that the sports category will be a three-way bout between L'Équipe, Eurosport and Sky Sport Formula 1. The leading satellite operator says that compelling sport is the backbone of TV entertainment and that sports channels, more than any other thematic category, have taken advantage of new technologies. In addition to offering viewers multiple camera angles, replay and increasingly high definition, the players, Eutelsat notes, have also taken the notion of thematic to new levels, with channels dedicated to a single discipline such as Formula One, golf, football or tennis. Launched on 12 December 2012, L'Équipe 21 is an all-HD free-to-air channel broadcasting to homes across France via the Fransat satellite platform and through the DTT network promoting more than 100 sports disciplines. The Amaury Group-owned channel addresses its markets and the challenges faced by the sports industry through debates, news and live coverage. Eurosport by contrast has been a long-established part of the continent's sports line-up, broadcasting in 20 languages to 131 million homes across Europe Eurosport. The last 12 months has seen Eurosport defy cyclical trends to generate huge audiences for tennis, cycling, winter sports and motorsports, attracting an increased number of viewers. Its coverage of the opening stages of the 100th Tour de France alone attracted over 17 million viewers in Europe, a 50% rise in audience compared with 2012. Adding to its parent's roster of top-level offerings in the UK and Germany in particular, Sky Sport Formula 1 HD is the first network in Italy dedicated to Formula 1, with three distinct channels: the race channel covering Grand Prix events and including interviews, commentary and predictions; live broadcast of the Grand Prix; and Race Control which is activated via the red button on the remote. The winner will be announced on 15 November 2014 at the Eutelsat TV Awards ceremony in Venice | |
