Indian Internet users are being encouraged to discover the best Hindi content across video streaming sites, websites, apps and blogs through a new Google-led Indian language Internet initiative, .
There are over 200 million Internet users in India – according to Google – equating to about 16% of its 1.2 billion-strong population. The majority of the country's English-speaking population of 198 million is already online but non-English speakers are vastly under-represented on the Internet in India.
A Hindi language voice Internet search service has also now been added by Google, which also plans to add other Indian languages including Tamil, Marathi and Bengali in coming months.
"India has about 200 million Internet users with about five million new users being added every month with 100% coming through mobile devices. At this pace, India will overtake the US in terms of number of users in the next 12 months," Rajan Anandan, vice president and managing director, Google India, told reporters.
The newly formed Indian Language Internet Alliance (ILIA) hopes that 300 million Indian language speakers will become active Internet users by 2017. The alliance – a consortium of 18 Internet industry partners – is aiming to accelerate building of Indic language content to support this goal.
