As it ratchets up its pre-Christmas marketing campaign, the blinkbox online video service has launched a dedicated app for the Sony PlayStation 3 console.
The Tesco-owned streaming service says that the dedicated PS3 app—joining equivalent offerings for smart devices, tablets, Macs and PCs—is a key development in its ambition to be on as many of the most popular entertainment devices in as many homes as possible.
Only weeks ago, blinkbox launched a multi-million pound ad campaign to show that it offers ten times more of the latest blockbuster films than over the top (OTT) video rivals such as Netflix and LOVEFiLM Instant. This latest move is designed to giving nearly six million UK homes access to the service’s library of films and TV shows. The app includes all the features of blinkbox apps on other devices including the ability to browse and buy from a catalogue of movies and TV; filter by Best Sellers, New Releases, Top Selling and Genre; predictive search to find a movie or TV series. Previously PS3 users had to rely on a web browser to access blinkbox.
New release films available now on blinkbox include The Great Gatsby, This is the End, Now You See Me and World War Z. TV series available include the hit Breaking Bad, latest episodes of Homeland and all three series of epic fantasy drama Game of Thrones.
“Teaming up with PS3 means we can bring the latest blockbuster movies and quality TV series to even more homes in the UK,” said blinkbox CEO Michael Comish. “The app further demonstrates our commitment to delivering stellar entertainment to as many people as possible, on a wide variety of devices.”
Added Murray Pannell, marketing director from PlayStation UK, said: “PlayStation 3 offers so much more than just great games and we know there is a huge interest within our audience for film. The addition of blinkbox to our current range of services is a very natural fit and one which significantly enhances the value proposition of PlayStation 3.”
