National Geographic Channel US, Relativity and Tandem Communications are to collaborate on a scripted series called Act of Valor, the first such undertaking for both NGC and Relativity.
Production is scheduled to begin in early 2014. Act of Valor, which is inspired by the film of the same name, will be produced by Tandem Communications (a Studiocanal company) and Relativity.
It will be written by Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers).
The series focuses on pararescuemen, also known as PJs, who are the heroes tasked with recovery and medical treatment of personnel in humanitarian and combat environments.
Tandem Communications (The Pillars of the Earth, Crossing Lines) will act as both the studio on the production as well handling international distribution.
Relativity's Act of Valor, which was an unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, opened at No 1 at the US box office with $24.5 million and went on to gross more than $80 million worldwide.
This green light further solidifies NGC's stake in the scripted content arena.
The channel garnered record-breaking ratings for its first forays into scripted content, with the factually based feature films SEAL Team Six becoming the highest-rated programme in 2012 for the network. Killing Lincoln achieved the highest rated programme in 2013 to date.
NGC is heading into the fall with Killing Kennedy, starring Rob Lowe, airing on 10 November.
