Showing the strength of the brand in global markets, BBC Worldwide has revealed a raft deals with broadcasters across Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.
As well as bolstering its programme sales in CEMA, the deals show how BBC Worldwide has continued its mission as the BBC’s main commercial arm, expanding its presence across the region with the recent launch of BBC Knowledge in Turkey, Cyprus, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
Perhaps first among equals in the new business, BBC Worldwide has made its first ever sales to Disney in Russia for the Doctor Who back catalogue (Series two to four), Robin Hood and preschool show Sarah & Duck, as well as Inspector Lynley, Father Brown and The Mrs Bradley Mysteries for TVC.
In the Baltic region, deals were struck with ETV Estonia, LRT Lithuania and LTV Latvia for a variety of programming from the BBC’s new catalogue. All three channels have acquired Africa, and ETV and LTV also picked up Father Brown. In addition LRT acquired The Paradise and Da Vinci’s Demons while LTV will be screening Call the Midwife.
Commenting on the deals, vice president and general manager, CEE, Heike Renner, said: “Through a concentrated focus on Russia and CIS over the past year we’ve been able to conclude business with new broadcasters for the first time. The CEE continues to be a growth market; we have a new team, we’re strengthening relationships with our new and existing partners and looking forward to even more sales growth in the region."
Closer to home, the corporation also announced that The Weinstein Company (TWC) has signed a major deal with Lookout Point and BBC Worldwide, to partner on the upcoming production of War and Peace made by BBC Cymru Wales Drama.
