IPTV among FTTH services for 50,000 Lagos residents
Rebecca Hawkes | 04-10-2013
Commercial quad-play broadband will be available in selected areas of Lagos from November 2013 in the first phase in an ambitious fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) project in Nigeria, which started in 2012.
Fibre Optic Services (FoS) will initially provide high speed Internet, fixed telephony, Internet protocol television (IPTV) and video surveillance to 50,000 homes and businesses in Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Ikeja, Apapa and Surulere, according to This Day.
"With guaranteed speeds starting from 4Mbps, FoS allows users to access the Internet at speeds at least ten times faster than 3G, WiMAX-4G or DSL while also making it possible to carry out multimedia communications such as cable television, video conferencing and video surveillance at the same time," said Ifeanyi Amah, group executive director, IPNX Nigeria.
IPNX Nigeria, the broadband company behind the scheme, is hoping to roll out FoS to two million households across Nigeria by 2017.
Broadband penetration in Nigeria is currently estimated at less than 5%, though Nigeria's new National Broadband plan promotes urban FTTH deployments such as this, and aims to provide 2.4Mbps bandwidth speed to consumers by the end of 2013.
